A Japanese research team led by Dr. Kei Hiraki, professor of computing science at the University of Tokyo, recently announced that his team had achieved a new speed record sending data over the internet at a speed of 9.08GB/s. This speed would allow a user to download a full length 1.5 GB film in 4 seconds instead of the current 40 minutes.

The record was set using a custom-built fibre optic network, which enables much faster speeds than the copper cables through which most homes connect to the internet and used the ‘next generation’ internet protocol called IPv6.
The increased speed had resulted from several technical improvements, including more precise “pacing” of data and better “buffering capability,” which resulted in less “packet loss.” A spokeswoman for internet2, a US-based consortium which helped develop the network, said that it was currently in the process of being upgraded to allow speeds of 100GB, which would allow films to be downloaded in fractions of a second. Dr Hiraki said that he expected to achieve speeds of 40GB within 2 years, and 100GB in 6 years.
If this ever became commercial reality, users could download their favorite Japanese TV shows, movies and dramas in a wink of an eye!
