Duran Duran commercial for Suntory Whiskey Q

Duran Duran

In the 1980s Michael Jackson promoted Suzuki scooters in Japan while British pop group Wham promoted Maxell audio cassette tapes. Another British super band Duran Duran promoted Suntory’s Whiskey Q through a series of bizarre bobblehead TV commercials.

Japanese dating show with Korean pop star Se7en and Sayaka Aoki

Se7en Korean Kpop star

Korean pop star Se7en 세븐 ( Choi Dong Woo 최동욱 崔東昱) is pretty popular in Japan especially among Japanese ladies. With his good looks. strong voice and concert tours in 2005, 2006 and 2007, he has built up a fan base within Japan. He’s also done the rounds of appearing on Japanese game shows and variety shows and in a very funny Japanese dating game show last year, comedian Sayaka Aoki 青木 さやか has to complete several “missions” with her date (Se7en) like she has to hug se7en and have se7en hug her back etc.  First dates in Japan don’t normally end in marriage proposals but watch part 3 to see what happens! Sorry, but no subs necessary to enjoy.

Doraemon is Japan’s newest ambassador

Doraemon

It was only a matter of time when the Japanese government was going to create the new post “Anime Amabassador” to harness the power of pop culture in diplomacy.  The unusual government post to promote Japanese culture through anime to the rest of the world, went to one of Japan’s best loved and most popular creatures Doraemon.

Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura appointed the popular cartoon robot cat as “anime ambassador,” handing a human-sized Doraemon doll an official certificate at an inauguration ceremony, along with dozens of “dorayaki” red bean pancakes — his favorite dessert — piled on a huge plate.

Doraemon

Doraemon — through voice actress Wasabi Mizuta, who spoke from behind a sliding paper screen — promised Komura that “Through my cartoons, I hope to convey to people abroad what ordinary Japanese people think, our lifestyles and what kind of future we want to build.”

We just want to know when the Japanese government will appoint a Japanese gravure idol like Aki Hoshino as an ambassador?

Gachapin and Mukku the fearless

Gachapin ガチャピン

We like Fuji TV’s children’s characters Gachapin ガチャピン (green) and Mukku (red) as do most kids in Japan.

On the updated English language website for FujiTVKids website, it describes Gachapin as a sports loving 5 year old child dinosaur from a tropical island whilst Mukku is described as a always hungry 5 year child bigfoot from an island near the North Pole.

Whatever they are and wherever they are from, this duo is fearless and willing to try anything!

Read more about Gachapin at his blog here.

Farting Fun on Japanese TV

We had previously posted about a real scientific analysis done by a panel of experts on Japanese TV about how best to avoid smelling your own fart. Although farting won’t score you points on a date with a cute Japanese girl, (she would be more embarrassed than amused) it seems ok farting to be for entertainment purposes on Japanese TV. Here are some clips of farting fun.

Cyril Takayama Magic Tricks

Cyril Takayama

Japanese celebrity magician Cyril Takayama is popular around the world thanks to his youtube videos and appearances on TV shows like MTV’s Room 401. Some of Cyril’s signature tricks include the hamburger in the menu trick, having his head fall off his shoulders, and the card in the window trick. His most dramatic trick was above a Las Vegas hotel, where he bungee jumps into the hotel pool with a sword and spears the chosen card of his co host from a deck floating in the water.  And yes, good klooks and magic tricks always impress the Japanese ladies.
