Coconuts Musume ココナッツ娘 Flashback

Coconuts Musume 1999 original line up

Before Leah Dizon リア・ディゾン made it in Japan, a group of girls from Hawaii tried to become big pop stars in Japan. Coconuts Musume ココナッツ娘 were another Hello Project ハロー!プロジェクト group formed in 1999 comprised of Ayaka Kimura, Chelsea Ching, April Barbaran, Danielle Delaunay, and Mika Todd as the original members.

With only Ayaka and Mika speaking Japanese, the group had some success but the non-Japanese speaking members struggled with language and lifestyle and eventually left the group.

Currently, Ayaka is the only member left in Coconuts Musume, however, she is still referred to within Hello! Project as Coconuts Musume Ayaka. It seems one basic ingredient for any gaijin wanting to be successful in Japanese showbiz is to be able to speak Japanese well.

Ayaka was the second best but the only one who could sing

  2. Dave Says:

Ayaka also did the awesome “Ayaka no totsugeki eikaiwa”(sp?) featuring members of Morning Musume!

  3. Jonathan (of the Japan Journal) Says:

I used to watch Ayaka’s Surprise English Lessons all the time when I was just starting my Japanese studies and it’s, in large part, due to those segments that I got the desire to continue on. (Thanks, Ayaka.)

I’ve always thought the group was an interesting little experiment. It’s something how the number of numbers was slowly taken down from five to four to three to two to just Ayaka.

Also, Mika is a fantastic singer. You should listen to some of her post-Coconuts works.
