Dragon Ash “Mixture-Kei”
Dragon Ash is a successful Japanese band that fuses punk, rock, alternative, reggae and hip hop, establishing a music genre known in Japan as “mixture-kei“.
They started in 1995 and their first big break was in 1999 with the 2 big hits, the glorious anthem “I Love Hip Hop” and the melodic “Grateful Days”.
Part of Dragon Ash’s appeal (and Japanese hip hop in general) is their positive lyrics which focus more on ideas like following one’s dreams and being true to your friends and family, unlike the gang land, guns and violence themes of US Gangsta rap. Though not as popular as they once were, the band still commands alot of respect from music lovers.
