Hula girls

In 1965 the planned closing of a coal mine in Iwaki (northeastern Japan) because of the shift to oil will put 2,000 people out of work with devastating effects on the community. The town’s largest employer, a mining company plans to build the Hawaiian Center spa resort to promote tourism, but the idea meets with resistance by the community’s union families who boycott the effort. However, a few of the young women in Joban see the call for dancers to possibly provide a more promising future.

Hula Girls won several awards upon release, including five major awards at the 2007 Japan Academy Awards, including that of best film, best director, best screenplay, best supporting actress (for Yu Aoi), and most popular film.

I guess ” Hula Girls ” won awards because people understood those actresses themselves had worked very hard for Hula dancing and made good performances as we saw in the film.
