Over at Martine Cotton’s excellent photo blog Frangipani, there is a great collection of photos showing manhole cover art in Japan. The local street artists have painted their their own unique designs reflecting the history and reputation of their district or city.

We think these street artists deserve our thanks for beautifying the very dull and ordinary and bringing character and life back to the neighborhood. Check out the entire collection of artistic manhole covers here.
